Remember that you are not the only client of your lawyer. While you may think you should control their time as your case is hugely important and you're paying their salary, think again. The lawyer has to divide their time between all of their clients, so give them a break.

Tell your lawyer all the little details surrounding your case. Lawyers use all that you give them to make a solid case so not telling them information can make it harder later. Don't be worried about anything you say being repeated; a lawyer is bound by confidentiality.

Keep tabs on what your lawyer is doing, and be sure you understand any documents filed in your name or any other action your lawyer takes on your behalf. Always make note of discussions and agreements you make with your lawyer so that, if there is ever any question later, you will be able to refer to your notes to see whether or not you gave permission for a specific action.
